Letters to Sydney
Every Day I Am Killing Cancer
By Heather Jose
After receiving the devastating diagnosis of stage IV breast cancer, Heather Jose, then 26, decided to fight the cancer head on. She used nutrition, exercise, visualization, and prayer to complement conventional treatment, which included chemotherapy, a double stem cell transplant, surgery and radiation, Heather put together a comprehensive plan to battle cancer on a daily basis.
To weather the storm, and as a heartfelt love letter to her daughter Sydney, Jose wrote Letters to Sydney, Every Day I Am Killing Cancer. Although her diagnosis meant having to deal with the reality she might not live to watch her daughter grow up, Heather’s narrative is filled with hope, faith, and a steel determination to not only live, but to let her daughter know how much she is loved. The result is not only moving, but cuts through to a message that could only come from someone who appreciates how precious life is. Any mother dealing with a breast cancer diagnosis will find wisdom and comfort within the pages of this text.
Letters to Sydney is filled with easy-to-use advice and is written in a conversational, down-to-earth tone. It’s as though Ms. Jose is reaching out from the pages to hold the reader’s hand in times of fear and trepidation – guiding them towards a hope filled and peaceful outcome.
Each chapter is punctuated by a philosophical quote or saying which also lend to the book’s healing voice. When you read:
Courage is fear that has said its prayers
it’s difficult not to do a bit of soul searching!
It has been over nine years since Heather’s diagnosis. Today she is healthy and passionate about encouraging healthcare providers and patients to make a difference everyday to achieve outstanding outcomes. Heather lives in Michigan with her husband, Larry, and two children, Sydney, for whom the book was conceived and written, and Ty, adopted from India after the cancer.
