Radiation therapy is half of a one-two punch employed against breast cancer in many treatment plans (the other half, of course, being chemotherapy.) Radiation oncology is much more sophisticated today than it was in the early days of cancer treatment, but it still has some unfortunate side effects, including an increased risk of lymphedema when the underarm area is irradiated.
