Expert Advice - Swimming

Breast Surgeon, Dr. William Wood states, "Several studies have demonstrated a benefit in outome for breast cancer survivors who exercise. The degree of benefit cannot be scientifically quantitated. The outcomes are conflicted because it is not clear to what degree we are seeing a RESULT or seeing an ASSOCIATION. People who are less fit, less healthy, are less likely to exercise. So the exercising population would be expected to enjoy some measures of better health even if they did not result from the exercise.

As a form of exercise swimming is superb. It develops cardiovascular conditioning, and it is sparing to the joints-- in contrast to high impact exercises like running that can bother the joints."

William Wood is a renowned surgical oncologist at Emory Healthcare in Atlanta.
