Medicare Change Offers New Benefit for Survivors
New Code Specifies Attachable Breast Form Option

ATLANTA, GA – Lawmakers focused their attention on many health care topics in 2009; one of those is helping breast care survivors in the New Year. Medicare has issued a new reimbursement code effective January 1, 2010 specifically for attachable breast forms, providing more options for women who wear prostheses. The L8031 code for Breast Prosthesis, Silicone or Equal, With Integral adhesive, will help with appropriate reimbursement levels for attachable breast forms. The current L8030 code will now be used solely for non-attachable breast forms (and those with 2-part adhesive strips) and is now described as follows: Breast Prosthesis, Silicone or Equal, Without Integral adhesive.

The change gives mastectomy fit specialists more to offer their customers. Patients who want the freedom and comfort that an attachable breast form provides can now expect Medicare to more appropriately cover the manufacturer’s suggested retail price.

Technology and innovation in the past decade have made attachable breast forms extremely secure and comfortable, and therefore, more commonly requested by mastectomy patients. Attachable forms benefit patients medically, as well, because the weight of the prosthetic is evenly dispersed back to the chest wall. The Contact breast forms by Amoena, worldwide leader of post-breast surgery products, feature a layer of revolutionary silicone adhesive that is ultra-secure but gentle to the skin.  Women who wear them say the Contact forms feel natural, like a part of them, and give them more freedom in clothing choices and confidence in their activities, including exercise. Contact forms are available in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, including the Balance partial symmetry shaper for women who’ve had breast-conserving surgeries (lumpectomy).

Amoena encourages women to check with their health plans for additional information about individual coverage.
