Here are 8 unique – and surprisingly simple – ways you can do your part to grow green at home.
1. Turn porch lights off. Unless you are expecting guests or have security concerns, you can save hours of electricity and lots of lightbulbs by turning your porch lights off in the evening.
2. Speaking of lightbulbs. You’ve heard this before – switch to compact fluorescent lights. They typically use one-quarter the wattage as their incandescent counterparts.
3. The no-rinse alternative. You can save up to 15 gallons of water per load if you don’t rinse your dishes before loading the dishwasher.
4. Unplug it. Appliances continue to draw electricity even if they’re turned off. Unplug toasters, coffee posts and even cell phone chargers after you’re finished using them. Consider getting a power strip with an on/off switch for larger appliances like computers.
5. Skip the pre-heat. Unless you’re baking which requires a more exact temperature, don't pre-heat your oven. Turn the oven on when you put your dish in and cook it a little longer than suggested.
6. Shorten your shower. Every minute you can shave off your shower is a whopping five gallons of water saved.
7. Cloth napkins for every meal. Cloth napkins are reusable and don’t fill up landfills like the paper kind. Plus, supper feels special!
8. No more doggie bags. If you frequently take leftovers home, make it a habit to bring a reusable container with you instead of using the restaurant’s styrofoam box.
